Movement in the undergrowth was unskilled and clumsy, rustling and loud, and who should jump out but Sparkpaw?

Catching her breath, the ginger-furred apprentice grinned with exhilaration. She had left camp for the first time in her life! And it was... breathtaking. Well... maybe that was just because she had been running like her life depended on it... but still, everything was so beautiful! She giggled and flopped on her back, rolling around like a small kit. She loved the way the undergrowth felt beneath her, squishy and soft. Staring up at the canopy of branches above her, she could see patches of sky between the boughs and instantly felt pride in her Clan, SkyClan.

"SkyClan is the best Clan in all of the world!" she proclaimed loudly, unabashed by whoever might have heard her. She laughed from sheer joy and batted her paws above her as though she might touch the sky between the branches. Sparkpaw was undeniably naive and kit-like, but her immaturity had a glow about it... It was almost infectious.

'You're only job today is hunt...and stay out of the way!'

Silvershade's orders weren't unexpected per say when the older warrior had shepherded Crystalpaw out of camp just after dawn. She'd gone on her first ever midnight patrol the night before and...got lost. Well, okay maybe not lost but she'd accidentally wandered away from the patrol and put the fear of StarClan in her mentor and the others on the patrol. So today this was Crystalpaw's punishment: hunting duty while Silvershade spent a day off away from her troublemaker apprentice. Crystalpaw didn't take the punishment too hard considering she had scared her mentor and probably put some more grey hairs on the she-cat's muzzle. Plus she had a whole day out of camp now and not even Pinestar could complain about it!

The downside? Crystalpaw had been hunting solo all day and it was almost sunhigh...

A sigh tugged itself free from the tortoiseshell she-cat as she walked along a tree branch. She had a squirrel clamped in her jaws, its bushy tail occasionally brushing the bark when Crystalpaw crouched the jump from one tree to another. The young she-cat wasn't moving particularly quickly, mostly because some of the exhilaration of hunting had worn off by now. There was a little part of Crystalpaw that wanted to go back to camp if only to bother some of her friends or pester some of the new apprentices into sparring or playing. She was lonely! Spending all day by herself was practically unnatural! But Silvershade would get mad if Crystalpaw went back to camp too early and tell her off for not following instructions. It wasn't an uncommon lecture but Crystalpaw was getting tired of hearing it. So, the tortoiseshell apprentice kept moving mechanically from one tree to another. She didn't have Deertail's expert balance so she didn't move as fast as the older tom but she made her way pretty well, as was expected of a SkyClan apprentice nearing the end of their training.

Crystalpaw was so caught up in her own thoughts that she nearly fell out of the tree when she caught a whiff of a clanmate. Ears perking up, Crystalpaw's nose twitched as she took in the scent. It was vaguely familiar, one of the new apprentices maybe...Tucking the squirrel into a hollow in the tree, Crystalpaw took off at a brisk trot along the tree branches, leaping lightly into the white-barked birch nearby. Her claws hooked into the bark easily even as the branch bent underfoot. Balancing like Silvershade had taught her, Crystalpaw made her way toward the birch glade, following the apprentice's scent. She tried to remember...oh! Sparkpaw! It was Sparkpaw! Grinning, Crystalpaw sped up until she was standing on a branch overlooking the glade clearing. Sure enough sprawled in the middle of the clearing was the dark ginger pelt of one of SkyClan's newest apprentices. Grinning, Crystalpaw slid down the branch she was on until she was near the end. Deertail had taught her how to do this, letting gravity slide her down the branch until she was free falling from the branch. It wasn't high up but higher than Crystalpaw used to jump before she'd gotten the shy warrior to teach her a trick or two. It made for an impressive entrance if nothing else, Crystalpaw smoothly sliding off the branch and dropping into the clearing, landing in a crouch near the glade's edge.

"Sparkpaw! What are you doing out here?" Crystalpaw meowed, waving her tail as she straightened up and trotted toward her clanmate. She tried not too look too pleased with herself but that was the first time she'd been able to do that move without Deertail reassuring her she'd land in one piece. If she looked a little proud of herself who could blame her?

Sparkpaw had just been giggling and batting at the air when she heard claws scraping against a branch. Her ears perked up immediately as she slowly got to her paws. Her fur bristled slightly, and her ears flattened as she prepared to do battle with whatever lurked in the trees. After a few moments, though, Crystalpaw landed on the edge of the clearing and Sparkpaw could relax. She smiled at the other she-cat, silently admiring the move she had just performed.

"Hey Crystalpaw! I was just... uh... I was just practicing some battle moves," she lied, feeling for the first time a prick of embarrassment. She couldn't tell the older she-cat that she snuck out of camp for the first time! How shameful. So Sparkpaw just played it off, her tiny little fangs gleaming in the sun as she grinned at Crystalpaw.

"So... what are you doing out here?" she asked, padding over to be closer to the tortoiseshell she-cat. She tilted her head as she awaited a reply, her bright eyes genuinely interested.
